National Climate Politics

Descriptor paragraph in italics
What is the overarching national plan (assuming there is one!)
What are the targets? Who is the person in charge of climate policy (or people?!) How much power do they have?
What big indicative decisions are coming up? How will they play out locally?
You need to know the bare outlines of this in case anyone asks you. It also helps you make sense of where you are in the bigger picture.

Why it is a core competency :
Keeps you aware of the wider world.

What consequences are there for yourself, the movement and the bigger picture if you can’t do level one? :
Not as important as the local dimension, imho, but you still look like a muppet if you don’t know the basics…

Stage One: xxx
Knows which department(s) and ministers are responsible for climate change, and the headlines of the government’s climate strategy

Stage Two: xxx
Aware of the upcoming decisions.
Aware of the different business groupings both pro and anti climate action.
Aware of the specific risks climate change will bring and adaptation strategies.

DO YOU REALLY NEED TO GO BEYOND LEVEL TWO, EH?

Stage Three: xxx
Keeps informed of the policies and their implementation (or not). Responds to consultations, sends letters to their MP about it.
On first name basis with the NGOs’ climate campaigners.

Stage Four:
Knows the policies – and their histories – inside out, could talk the hindleg off a civil servant, berating them for their timidity and stupidity. Could out-Paxman Paxman if given the opportunity. But really, shouldn’t you be out having a life, and being an activist?!
